Definition:
Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca is an eye condition commonly known as, “dry eyes”. It is characterized by decreased in tear production and involves inflammation of the conjunctiva. In the common language, Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca means dryness of the conjunctiva and cornea.
Other names for this disorder includes: xerophthmalia, dry eye syndrome, Sicca syndrome, keratitis Sicca.
Diagnosis:
Manifestations of the symptoms are enough to confirm diagnosis; however, several tests can also be performed to examine any damage in the eye like Slit Lamp examination, Schirmer's test, and Tear Breakup Time (TBUT) Test.
Treatment:
Resting the eye and repeated blinking is helpful. Supplemental lubrication to aid rehydration is one of the most effective parts of treatment. Temporary relief can be achieved by the application of artificial tears and lubricating tear ointments. Mild topical steroids and surgery if there are abnormalities in the eyelids are some of the medical treatments for Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca.

* Dry, itchy, tired eyes
* Redness, pulling sensation, and pain behind the eye
* Unusual feeling that there is an embedded thing in the eye like a small piece of dirt
* Stringy discharge from the eye
* Excessive tearing sensation in the eye
* Reflex tear
These symptoms progressively increase in dusty, windy, and smoky locations. Other settings like high altitude, low humidity days, and even just by using the hair blower, fan, or heater also aggravates the symptoms of Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca.

This disease is caused by the following factors:
* Inadequate tear production
* Irregular tear composition
* Aging because tear production diminishes with age
* Abnormalities of the eyes or eyelids
* Eye injury of any kind
* People using contact lenses are prone to developing dry eyes
* After an eye surgery like LASIK and refractive surgeries
