Definition:
Leukocyte-adhesion deficiency syndrome is an autosomal recessive disorder that causes recurrent infections in the different parts of the body. It has two distinct genotypes known as type I and type II. Type II is known to create fewer infections but greater delay in developmental.
Diagnosis:
Patients undergo several immune function tests, and results would show high levels of neutrophils which are already harmful to the bloodstream.
Treatment:
The disease is cured by bone marrow transplant and gene therapy.
Symptoms and Signs:
Persons with the said disease already experience bacterial problems during the neonatal period. Diseases such as pneumonia, gingivitis and peritonitis are usual and become life-threatening since the affected infant is still unable to fight against the invading pathogens.
Causes:
Leukocyte adhesion deficiency syndrome is an inherited molecular dysfunction in the chromosome 21. This defect generates a non-functioning protein that in turn hinders the flow of other nutrients in the blood stream which are supposed to fight infections.
