Definition:
Lipoid congenital adrenal hyperplasia is a kind of CAH brought about by defects during the first stages of adrenal cortisol synthesis. The disease commonly affects the adrenal glands and result to impaired development of sex characteristics.
Treatment:
There is no standard treatment for the disease, but glucocorticoids are presrcribed to cover to cover the stress due to adrenal deficiency.
Symptoms and Signs:
Persons affected with the disease have defective gonads (in males), undergo hypoglycemia and hyperpigmentation. They also develop hypertension at a very early age.
Causes:
Lipoid congenital adrenal hyperplasia is caused by a defect in the gene that transports cholesterol to the mitochondria. Because of this, the cell creates damages in the formation of sex characteristics and bring about certain defects in the reproductive system.
