Definition:
Listeriosis is a bacterial disease caused by the strain Listeria monocytogenes. It is a rare infection found in newborn babies and the elderly.
Diagnosis:
The bacterium L. monocytogenes can be cultured from the blood, but there are no available stool or serological tests to diagnose this disease.
Treatment:
Listeriosis is treated with antibiotics such as ampicillin, and gentamicin. It is also best to eat fresh, and properly cleaned and cooked vegetables all the time.
Symptoms and Signs:
As an effect of a certain syndrome, patients with listeriosis also experience the symptoms of the syndromes they had, among of which being infections during pregnancy, CNS infection, gastroenteritis and neonatal infection.
