Definition:

Neisseria Meningitidis is simply referred to as meningococcus. It is a gram-negative diplococcal bacterium that is remarkably known for its significant role in meningitis, which is medically known as the inflammation of the meninges. Neisseria Meningitidis is the only form of bacterial meningitis identified to cause prevalent cases or epidemics. This syndrome does not only refer to meningitis but actually refers to several types of diseases caused by the Neisseria Meningitidis bacteria.


Diagnosis:

Diagnosis is undertaken by sending Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) specimen for laboratory identification of the organisms. The organisms are then cultured in the chocolate agar plate before submission to other testing procedures including: oxidase, carbohydrates maltose, sucrose, and glucose test. Once the organism reaches circulation; blood cultures are drawn for the necessary processes that will aid diagnosis.


Treatment:

Early intervention is the best treatment for diseases brought about by Neisseria Meningitidis; this is the reason why Emergency hospitalization is highly necessary. Drug administration is usually achieved through antibitiotics, which may include: * Penicillin * Ampicillin * Oily Chloramphenicol * Chloramphenicol * Ceftriaxone Usually treatment is applied based on the symptoms that appear.


Symptoms and Signs:

Neisseria Meningitidis manifests general symptoms including: * Fatigue * Nausea and vomiting * High Fever * Headache * Neck stiffness that may lead to coma and death.
