Definition:
Neurofibrillary tangles are pathological protein aggregates found within the neurons of patients identified as having Alzheimer’s Disease. Hyperphosphorylation of a protein associated with a microtubule is the one responsible for the formation of these tangles; causing it to gather together and accumulate in an insoluble form.
Along with Alzheimer’s disease, Creutzfeldt-Jakob and Supranuclear Palsy are some of the disease that is proven to be having the presence of neurofibrillary tangles.
It was Alois Alzheimer, who described neurofibrillary tangles in one of his patients who have Alzheimer’s disease.
These abnormal structures are found in various parts of the brain and known to be as one of the hallmarks of Alzheimer’s Disease.
