Definition:
XY Female type Gonodal Dysgenesis otherwise known as the Swyer Syndrom is a type of female hypogonadism wherein there is no functional gonads present in the person to induce puberty unlike those of common normal girl.
Diagnosis:
Clinical evaluation of delayed puberty, checking of kayotype and imaging of the pelvis are used to diagnose the medical condition (Ghosh, S. N.; Shah, P. M.; Gharpure, H. M.: Absence of H-Y antigen in XY females with dysgenetic gonads. Nature 276: 180-181, 1978).
Treatment:
Treatment includes estrogen and progesterone therapy. Surgical removal of the gonads are also advised to prevent developing cancer.
Symptoms and Signs:
Undeveloped secondary characteristics at puberty, absence of menstruation and streak gonads are the symptoms of this medical condition.
Causes:
Defect in genes and its failure to differentiate testes in an XY chromosome is the prevalent cause of the syndrome.
