Definition:
Gonococcal conjunctivitis is a sexually-transmitted ocular disease. It is a very rare eye infection in adults and is most commonly seen in infants by mothers who are suffering gonorrhea.
Diagnosis:
Laboratory examination of the discharge swabbed from the patient's eye is used to confirm the presence or absence of the medical condition.
Treatment:
Treatment includes prophylaxis (Barsam PC. Specific prophylaxis of gonorrheal ophthalmia neonatorum. A review. N Engl J Med. Mar 31 1966;274(13):731-4). It is also treated through administration of oral erythromycin and systemic acyclovir to reduce the chance of a systemic infection.
Symptoms and Signs:
Symptoms include intense inflammation of the eye, copious purulent discharge.
Causes:
It is a contagious eye infection caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
