Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome
Definition:

Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome or HPS for brevity, is a deadly medical condition where the disease is transmitted by infected rodents through urine, droppings, or saliva.


Diagnosis:

Diagnosis may include laboratory tests and screening like CBC, platelets counts, x-ray of the chest and serological testing (Kruger DH, Ulrich R, Lundkvist A (2001) "Hantavirus infections and their prevention", Microbes And Infection 3 (13): 1129-1144).


Treatment:

Treatment includes oxygen therapy due to problem in breathing and close monitoring of blood gases. Endotracheal tube and ventilator are also advised for person suffering from the medical condition.


Symptoms and Signs:

Symptoms includes breathing problems usually accompanied by fever, chills, malaise, headaches, nausea, abdominal and back pain as well as gastro intestinal problems and tachycardia and tachypnoea.


Causes:

It is caused by hantavirus carried by rodents like mouse and deer and are present in their feces, droppings or saliva.
