Definition:
Lymphomas are part of the broad group of diseases called hematological neoplasms. It is a type of cancer that originates in a type of white blood cell in the vertebrate immune system that is commonly known as the lymphocytes.
Diagnosis:
Lymphoma is diagnosed through interview and laboratory tests and examinations like those done through blood tests, biopsy, imaging studies like x-rays, CT scan, MRI scan, lymphangiogram and Gallium scan. Bone Marrow examination is also used to detect lymphoma.
Treatment:
Just like any cancers, lymphoma is cured through early diagnosis and treated by chemotherapy, radiation therapy and other therapies that may include conventional anti-metabolites, stem cell transplants, and engineered T-cells designed to selectively target hematopoietic cancers (Scheinberg,D.A and Jurcic,J. 2004 Treatment of Leukemia and Lymphoma).
Symptoms and Signs:
Symptoms include painless swelling in the neck, under arm or in the groin area accompanied with fever, chilling, unexplained weight loss and night sweats. These swelling however nonspecifics but they particularly last for days and they persist over time and cannot be explained or treated by normal medications of common infections.
Causes:
Old age, infections Infection with human T-lymphocytic virus type 1 (HTLV-1), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), Helicobacter pylori, having medical conditions that compromise the immune system, exposure to toxic chemicals and family history of lymphoma are the common cause of the disease.
