Definition:
Degeneration is a medical condition that is mostly found in elderly adults wherein the center of the lining of the eye known as the macula area of the retina suffers thinning atrophy and to certain extent, bleeding of the eye. It one of the leading cause of central vision loss or blindness for those ages over fifty (de Jong PT (2006). "Age-related macular degeneration". N Engl J Med. 355 (14): 1474 – 1485).
Diagnosis:
Optical coherence tomography and Fluorescein angiography are used to diagnose Macular degeneration.
Treatment:
There is no known cure yet for Macular Degeneration but additional lighting and magnifiers can help in alleviating its symptoms.
Symptoms and Signs:
Common symptoms include blurry vision and the usual yellow deposits in the macula called drusen between the retinal pigment epithelium and choroids.
Causes:
Age factor, polymorphing or deposits in the macula, and too much exposure to sun are common causes of macular degeneration in general.
