Definition:
Age-related Macular Degeneration is a medical condition that is mostly found in elderly adults wherein the center of the lining of the eye known as the macula area of the retina suffers thinning atrophy and to certain extent, bleeding of the eye. It one of the leading cause of central vision loss or blindness for those ages over fifty (de Jong PT (2006). "Age-related macular degeneration". N Engl J Med. 355 (14): 1474 – 1485).
Diagnosis:
Optical coherence tomography and Fluorescein angiography are used to diagnose Macular degeneration that is age-related.
Treatment:
There is no known cure yet for Age-Related Macular Degeneration but additional lighting and magnifiers can help in alleviating its symptoms.
Symptoms and Signs:
Common symptoms includes blurry vision and the usual yellow deposits in the macula called drusen between the retinal pigment epithelium and choroids.
Causes:
Age-related Macular Degeneration is usually due to old age.
