Definition:
Organic brain syndrome refers to various acute and chronic physical disorders impairing mental function.
Treatment:
Organic brain syndrome is treated based on the cause. Patients are not primarily diagnosed with the syndrome.
Symptoms and Signs:
Symptoms are based on the responsible disease. Patients may be confused; have impaired memory, judgment, and intellectual function; and agitated. The symptoms are usually attributed to psychiatric illness causing diagnostic difficulty.
Causes:
Conditions associated with organic brain syndrome include Alzheimer's Disease, epilepsy Meningitis, or withdrawal from drugs or alcohol. Clinical depression, neuroses, and psychoses may simultaneously occur with the OBS.
