Osteochondritis
Definition:

Osteochondritis describes a special variety of joint diseases involving the abnormality in the cartilage and/or bone development. OCD typically affects the elbows, shoulders, or knees. This is normally brought about by joint degeneration due to wear and tear.


Diagnosis:

Conducting radiographs if the affected joints and physical examination are the main methods used to diagnose OCD in patients. In this medical case, early diagnosis is highly important to be able to apply preventive measures for further degeneration. Without ant manage treatment, condition will worsen overtime and lameness can become irreversible.


Treatment:

Some OCD lesions may not cause lameness and will probably not require specific treatment. In some cases, surgery may be required to prevent the possibility of lameness.


Symptoms and Signs:

Lameness is one of the major presenting symptoms of OCD. It usually occurs between 4-8 months of age. Males are known to be three times more prone victims of this condition than females. Lameness may manifest as a sudden event. This condition generally diminishes with rest and worsens with exercise


Causes:

Among the identified causes of OCD include environmental, nutritional and genetic factors.
