Osteomalacia
Definition:

Osteomalacia is a medical condition that only affects adults. Among the children the same condition is known as rickets. Osteomalacia primarily affects the bones as well ass the muscles. This is mainly triggered by the deficiency mineral found in the bones that results to increased risks of pain and fractures.

Diagnosis:

Early diagnosis is based on the medical history, lifestyle and symptoms. Other supplementary examinations include blood tests and x-rays.

Treatment:

Treatment includes regular injections of Vitamin D that is administered every six months or so. This has been proven convenient and effective treatment. Other medications take in the form of tablets, liquids, powders and Vitamin D supplements.

Symptoms and Signs:

Sometimes the symptoms associated with osteomalacia can be very vague. Patients mostly experience simple aches and pain that does not really raise an alarm during the early stages. As the condition develops, the pain becomes more prominent and lasting. Areas that are usually affected are the hips and lower back. Bone tenderness and muscle weakness may also be noticed.

Causes:

The primary cause of this disease is the lack of vitamin D in the body. This vitamin regulates the building process of the bone and the method at which the body handles phosphate and calcium. Other possible causes may include kidney and liver diseases.
