Definition:
Pancreatoblastoma is also known as the infantile form of pancreatic carcinoma. This medical condition is considered to be one of the extremely rare types of pancreatic tumor that typically develops during early childhood. In comparison to all other carcinomas, PB has been known to be less aggressive in infants as well as children than the cases found in adult.
Diagnosis:
Diagnosis includes ultrasound and other imaging tests such as CT scans and MRI. Symptoms of this disease are usually the main basis of the diagnosis until further exams are conducted to verify.
Treatment:
Total pancreatectomy is considered to be the most important and effective treatment in pancreatoblastoma. This is often supplemented with Neoadjuvant chemotherapy that has been proven to be an important tool in unresectable tumors, which is believed to increase the disease-free survival.
Symptoms and Signs:
Among the most common symptoms of Pancreatoblastoma include upper abdominal pain, asymptomatic, vomiting, jaundice, abdominal mass, loss of appetite, enlarged abdomen, fatigue and gastrointestinal obstruction.
Causes:
Evidence has suggested that this pancreatic cancer is closely linked to the inhalation and/or the absorption of carcinogens that are excreted by the pancreas. The carcinogens identified include cigarettes, food additives, as well as industrial chemicals.
