Paraomphalocele
Definition:

Paraomphalocele is a medical condition that is characterized by a very rare birth anomaly involving a particular defect in the abdominal wall. This disorder causes the contents of the abdomen to be protruded, which typically occurs near the umbilical region.

Diagnosis:

A diagnosis is primarily based through echosonogram during the prenatal stage. At such time surgical intervention may be required.

Treatment:

Treatment approaches include genetic testing along with genetic counseling during pregnancy stage. If the infant is found without any other birth defects, a surgical procedure may be performed to correct the opening of the abdominal wall.

Symptoms and Signs:

Among the signs and symptoms associated with paraomphalocele include abdominal lump, protusion of the abdominal wall, reduced motility of the gut as well as impaired absorption.

Causes:

There are several factors that contribute to the development of this medical condition. Paraomphalocele is usually found in high-risk pregnancies that may be a result to a number of complications such as infections, smoking, maternal age and drug abuse among others. Recent studies have also shown that the change in paternity may also be an underlying cause of Paraomphalocele. This suggests that the immune system of the mother may also play a role as well as that of the father.
