Definition:
Perilymph fistula is also known as labyrinthine fistula. This is a condition wherein there is leakage of the inner ear fluid entering into the middle ear. This condition is believed to be a complication due to stapedectomy. Perilymphatic fistula are classified into four categories, namely congenital, iatrogenic, spontaneous, and traumatic.
Diagnosis:
There is no known diagnostic test for Perilymphatic fistula hence it is difficult to diagnose the disease. The diagnosis mostly depends on a high degree of just clinical suspicion. Evaluation for the patients will include a careful taking down of medical history, electronystagmography, physical examination, audiogram, imaging, and fistula test.
Treatment:
Treatment for Perilymph fistula is consist of administering conservative medical therapy or some suggests surgical exploration to close the fistula. Medical therapies also consists of strict bed rest, refraining or not doing any strenuous activity, and head elevation.
Symptoms and Signs:
Symptoms manifested by patients suffering from perilymphatic fistula include sensorineural hearing loss, vertigo, motion intolerance, unsteadiness, tinnitus, dysequilibrium, and aural fullness.
Causes:
It is believed by most physicians that Perilymphatic fistula is complication caused by stapedectomy. Other than that, it is believed to be a miscommunication between the two organs of the ear hence the leakage.
