Definition:

Periodontitis, is a collective name of inflammatory diseases that affects the tissues which is surrounding and supporting the teeth. Periodontitis is the state involving a progressive loss of bone which surrounds the teeth and could lead to loosening ore eventually loosing the teeth if it remains untreated. Periodontitis is very common disorder.


Diagnosis:

Diagnosis of periodontitis is usually performed by dentist. The do it by inspecting the tissues surrounding the teeth using radiographs to check for bone loss.


Treatment:

Treatment for Periododitis starts by practicing an excellent oral hygiene which will include a twice a day brushing of teeth with flossing and use of mouthwashs. Initial therapy for Periodontal includes the removal of the bacterial plaque and the calculus in the teeth by cleaning below the gumline b scaling and also root planing. A reevaluation is done to check if the initial therapy was successful. Surgery is then done if the initial treatment was found not successful. After surgery there should be maintenance which will involve visiting the dentist fpr regular checkups and also cleaning once every 3-4 months.


Symptoms and Signs:

Patients with Periodonditis manifests symptoms like occasional redness of the gums and bleeding when being brushed or when using dental floss. In sever cases bleeding can be observed when the patient bites hard food like apples, gum swellings that recurs occasionaly, bad breath, persistent metallic taste, gingival recession, deep pockets in between the gums and the teeth, and loose teeth.


Causes:

Periodontitis is most commonly caused by the convergence of some bacteria that adheres and grew on the surface of the teeth along with an extensive aggressive response of the immune system against the bacteria.
