Definition:
Raine syndrome is a rare disease in newborn infants characterized by intracranial calcification, or an abnormal increase in bone density, which can prove ultimately fatal. Raine syndrome is also alternatively called osteosclerotic bone dysplasia.
Symptoms and Signs:
Raine syndrome presents with craniofacial anomalies, including exophthalmos, midface hypoplasia, microcephaly, cleft palate, gum hypertrophy and generalized osteosclerosis on radiography in newborns. Infants born with this condition usually die within a few hours after birth.
