Definition:
Sarcosinemia is a condition in which the concentration of sarcosine in the blood plasma and urine are abnormally elevated. Sarcosine is a type of amino acid found in muscles and other body tissues.
Symptoms and Signs:
Sarcosinemia is a relatively benign condition, and affected patients are frequently asymptomatic.
Causes:
Sarcosinemia can develop as a consequence of genetic mutations of sarcosine metabolism. Folate deficiency has also been identified as a possible cause, particularly because folate is required to convert sarcosine to glycine.
