Definition:
A synovial sarcoma is a rare form of cancer which typically occurs near to the joints of the arm or leg, and is one of the soft tissue sarcomas.
Diagnosis:
Synovial sarcoma is diagnosed through the use of the following: biopsy, immunohistochemical analysis, ultrastructural findings, and genetic testing.
Treatment:
Treatment usually involves surgery, conventional chemotherapy, and radiotherapy.
Symptoms and Signs:
Synovial sarcoma usually arises with an otherwise asymptomatic swelling or mass, although general symptoms related to maligancies can be reported such as fatigue.
Causes:
Although synovial sarcoma does not have a clearly defined cause, genetic factors are believed to influence the occurence of this disease.
