Definition:
Uridine monophosphate synthetase deficiency is a rare metabolic disorder where deficiency of two enzymes impairs the body’s ability to break down orotic acid. Build up of said acid can cause damage to the body.
Symptoms and Signs:
Some of the symptoms of the disease include failure to thrive, apathy, mental retardation, lassitude, and repeated functions.
Causes:
This enzyme deficiency is inherited in an autosomal recessive trait in Holstein cattle and will cause death before birth.
