Definition:
One of eight herpes viruses, Varicella zoster virus (VZV) is known to infect humans and other vertebrates. The virus commonly causes chicken pox in both children and shingles and postherpetic neuralgia among adults.
Treatment:
Application of calamine lotion and other antipruritic medications are typically used along with soothing baths with the addition of oatmeal and Benadryl PO. New studies have also demonstrated the effectiveness of post-exposure immunization in preventing the development of the disease. Active immunization is also recommended.
Symptoms and Signs:
The child will usually break out with rashes on the trunk after 1-2 days of mild prodromal symptoms. Among teenagers and adults, high fevers and the development of pneumonia are common.
