Definition:
Feline spongiform encephalopathy is one of the three kinds of Prion diseases that greatly affect humans and animals. It is a contagious disease that triggers the brain's function, making patients exhibit unusual, uncontrollable behaviors. This can be a fatal disease when not immediately treated. Other forms of Prion diseases include mad cow disease, mink encephalopathy, and the bovine spongiform encephalopathy. It is also called “laughing disease”.
Diagnosis:
Feline spongiform encephalopathy is diagnosed through observation and strict monitoring of symptoms, provided that the patient was exposed to affected animals prior to the onset of the disease.
Treatment:
To treat the disease relies on the symptoms demonstrated by the patient. Drugs that fight hallucinations and dementia are administered to persons affected by the disease. Affected animals meanwhile are isolated and are subject to quarantine procedures to prevent the spread of the disease.
Symptoms and Signs:
The symptoms of the disease are difficult to determine, since Prion diseases share nearly the same characteristics. Patients with Prion diseases normally lose coordination, followed by dementia, and eventual death.
Causes:
Feline spongiform encephalopathy is contracted via cat refuse. Cats (as well as other members of the cat family) that carry the disease are mostly detected to have genetic disorders thus they produce such disease-causing agent.
