Definition:
Also called chronic cystic mastitis, diffuse cystic mastopathy and mammary dysplasia characterized by noncancerous lumps in the breast; roughly 30 – 60 % of women estimated to suffer from this condition.
Diagnosis:
Besides from thorough history and physical exam, biopsy of the affected area will also be needed.
Treatment:
For this condition there is no treatment. Aspiration of a fine needle draining fluid from the larger cysts, monitoring caffeine and fat intake, wearing well supportive bra may help ease the symptoms.
Symptoms and Signs:
Appearance of lump in the breast that is smooth with defined edges, and usually free moving; usually located in the upper, outer sections of the breast .
May also present with persistent or intermittent aching sensation in the breast and nipples may be tender or itchy feeling.
Causes:
There's no definitive cause that are fully understood but somehow they are found to be related to ovarian hormone levels and also related to the menstrual cycle and dietary conditions. In which when a women is undergoing menopause the condition subsides.
Also it is lower of incidence in women who are taking birth pills possibly due to regulation of hormone in the body.
