Because the disease is uncommon antibiotic treatment are limited. For experimental animals, sulfadiazine is used also in humans. The bacteria that cause the disease are sensitive to tetracyclines, ciprofloxacin, streptomycin, novobiocin, gentamicin, imipenem, ceftrazidime, and the sulfonamides.

Infections in the blood stream
Chronic suppurative infections
Fever

The disease is caused by the Burkolderia mallei bacterium.
