Definition:
Paraneoplastic syndromes particularly that of the nervous system is a result of the body's reaction to the presence of cancer or to substances that an existing tumor located in the nervous system may produce.
Diagnosis:
Diagnosis includes undergoing several tests including blood tests, spinal tap or lumbar puncture, radiology tests and imaging tests like the MRI, EEG, ECG CT Scan and Positron Emission Tomography or PET scans.
Treatment:
Treatment includes chemotherapy, radiation, surgery and medications such as corticosteroid. It may also include undergoing to the plasma exchange process or the Plasmapherises procedure which aims to remove the plasma in the blood cells; intravenous Immunoglobulin or IVIg.
Symptoms and Signs:
Symptoms of the Paraneoplastic Syndromes of the Nervous System includes dizziness, seizures, slurred speeches, problem with walking and keeping balance and memory loss.
Causes:
Paraneoplastic syndrome of nervous system is usually caused by the antibodies used to fight cancer and the white blood cells or the T-cells that instead of fighting the cancer cells only, the said antibodies also destroys normal cells in the nervous system and the brain. It is said to be caused also by hormones and chemicals produced by the tumor through its secretion.
