Definition:
Nontropical Sprue otherwise known as the Celiac sprue, is a condition triggered by consumption of the protein gluten whereby the person's immune reaction occurs in the small intestine which results in the damage to the surface of the small intestine and to the inability to take nutrients found in food. Thus, it is an enteropathy which is usually a gluten-sensitive disease which nontropical sprue and gluten-sensitive enteropathy, celiac disease occurs in people who have a susceptibility to gluten intolerance
Diagnosis:
Diagnosis includes undergoing blood tests and trial of gluten free diet to confirm the presence of disease.
Treatment:
Treatment of Celiac Disease or Nontropical Sprue has no direct cure but treatment focus more on the symptoms as they manifests. Change and preferring a gluten-free diet is also advised inorder to lessen or minimize the inflammation of the small intestine.
Symptoms and Signs:
Symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal pain, bloating, anemia, upset stomach, cramps, skin rashes, weight loss, abdominal cramps, oily and grayish stools and stunted growth especially in children.
Causes:
At present the cause of Nontropical Sprue or Celiac Disease is not yet known but it is said to be an inherited disease.
