Definition:

It is an infection that is caused by a species of the bacteria genus Pasteurella that is found in animals and humans. The bacteria are carried in the mouth and respiratory tract of animals and humans.


Diagnosis:

Isolation of Pasteurella multocida bacteria is usually done in sterile location such as the blood, pus or CSF.


Treatment:

High dose of penicillin is the common cure. As an alternative tetracycline and chloramphenicol is used in beta-lactam intolerant patients.


Symptoms and Signs:

Common symptoms are cellulites, swelling, redness, tenderness and discharge at the infected site, regional lymphadenopathy, chills, fever, high level of leukocyte and neutrophil.


Causes:

The bacteria that cause Pasteurellosis is the bacteria Pasteurella multocida.
