Definition:
Pervasive disintegrative disorder is a developmental disorder in which children whose development is normal until age 3 or 4, exhibit a severe loss of social, communication and other skills after the said age.
Diagnosis:
To preliminarily diagnose pervasive disintegrative disorder, developmental screenings are conducted. To confirm a diagnosis, a formal and comprehensive evaluation follows, through the conduct of the following tests: medical history, genetic tests, neurological examination, communication and language tests, hearing, and vision tests, among others.
Treatment:
The treatment for pervasive disintegrative disorder is behavior therapy, specifically designed to help the child learn or relearn verbal, social, and self-care skills.
Symptoms and Signs:
The symptoms of this condition are significant loss of previously acquired or learned verbal, social, and motor skills after a certain age, lack of normal function, and repetitive and stereotyped behavioral patterns, among others.
Causes:
The cause of pervasive disintegrative disorder is still not known. It is however, found to be associated with epilepsy, lipid storage diseases and tuberous sclerosis.
