Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction
Definition:

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TJD), also known as myofacial pain dysfunction, is problematic state of the jaw muscles used for chewing, or of the temporomandibular joint, which links the lower jaw to the rest of the skull.


Diagnosis:

There is rarely a need for diagnostic procedures to determine the onset of the disorder.


Treatment:

Treatment for TJD includes muscle relaxation exercises and analgesics.


Symptoms and Signs:

The main symptom of the disorder is pain in the jaws. Clicking and popping sounds in the joints can also be heard when the muscles are used. The pain can spread on to the neck and shoulder blades. Normal vision and balance are also impaired.


Causes:

Causes of the dysfunction may be due to trauma, bruxism and arthritis.
