Ductal Carcinoma in Situ
Definition:

Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is characterized by the abnormal multiplication of cells and the gradual formation of a growth within a milk duct of the breast. This medical condition may be difficult to detect. However, this is normally not a fatal condition since it is not a form of cancer but would still require a form of treatment.


Diagnosis:

Diagnosis is usually based on mammography results of both breasts which may show some specks that may indicate microcalcifications. Biopsy may also be conducted to determine and evaluate the affected tissue of the breast. This can help eliminate the possibility of breast cancer as well as help determine the type of treatment would best suit the patient.


Treatment:

Treatment for Ductal carcinoma in situ includes lumpectomy and combination of other treatment such as radiation therapy and simple mastectomy.


Symptoms and Signs:

does not display any initial signs and symptoms. This is the reason why it often goes undetected for years. In some women, they experience nipple discharges and lumps on the breast.


Causes:

There is still to real explanation as to the real cause of Ductal carcinoma in situ. However, medical studies are exploring the possibility of a combination of environmental factors, genetics and hormonal exposures.
