Definition:
Lichen simplex chronicus, or neurodermatitis, is a stubborn skin condition that can cause the affected skin to become thick and leathery.
Diagnosis:
Diagnosis is typically based on the skin's appearance and a history of itching and scratching. The doctor may also recommend one of the following tests to rule out other causes or to confirm the diagnosis: patch testing and punch biopsy.
Treatment:
To stop the stubborn itch-scratch style, the person must stop scratching the affected area. The doctor may also recommend one or more of the following: prescription medication, wet dressings, and counseling.
Symptoms and Signs:
Signs and symptoms of neurodermatitis include: itchy skin in a single limited area; leathery or scaly texture to the skin; and raised, rough patch that is red or darker than the rest of the skin.
Causes:
The exact cause of neurodermatitis is not known. Occasionally, neurodermatitis begins with something that simply rubs or irritates the skin, such as tight clothing or a bug bite. As one rubs or scratches the area, it gets itchier. The more the person scratches, the more it itches.
