Scratch Dermatitis
Definition:

Scratch dermatitis is medically known as neurodermatitis, which is actually the tendency of a person to scratch simply out of habit. This cycle is brought about by a stubborn skin condition that causes the skin to become leathery and thick.


Diagnosis:

Diagnosis is typically based on the appearance of the skin as well as itching history. A punch biopsy test may also be conducted to determine the type of skin ailment the patient has. This will become the basis of the treatment approach for the said condition.


Treatment:

There are a number of treatment options available to treat this condition such as prescription medications that includes oral corticosteroids and antihistamines, wet dressings with medicated creams and counseling.


Symptoms and Signs:

Symptoms of scratch dermatitis itching on a certain area, scaly or leathery texture of the affected skin, rough and raised patches that will grow darker than the rest of the skin.


Causes:

The exact cause of scratch dermatitis is still largely unknown. This usually begins when a person simply rubs the skin that causes the irritation. The more you scratch the area it comes more itchy that eventually causes the irritation to form.
