Winged Scapula
Definition:

Winged scapula is a medical condition in which the border of a person’s shoulder blade is placed in a lateral posterior position (outward-backward). The back then appears to be wing-like because of the deformed protrusion of the scapula.

Diagnosis:

The disorder can be diagnosed by X-ray examination of the shoulder blades.

Treatment:

Physical therapy is recommended to help correct the scapula’s posterior posture.

Symptoms and Signs:

Apart from the wig-like structure of the scapula, the person may also experience shoulder pain on the shoulder blades and limited strength to use the shoulders.

Causes:

A winged scapula may be caused by injuries in the shoulders, damage to the trapezius muscle, or impingement of the thoracic nerve.
