Definition:
Ringworm of the body is a fungal infection affecting the top layer of the skin. It is also referred to as tinea corporis.
Diagnosis:
The doctor determines whether the condition is ringworm or another skin disorder by sample skin scrapings or samples from the infected area and examine them under a microscope. If it is ringworm, a fungus shows. If negative but ringworm is still suspected, the samples are further tested in a lab.
Treatment:
Except for individuals with weak immune systems, the condition is not usually serious. The infected area is usually treated with antifungal medications that are applied to the skin. However, if the condition is severe and does not respond to over-the-counter medications, the doctor prescribes a topical or oral medication. But oral medications have side effects such as rashes, gastrointestinal upset, and abnormal function of the liver.
Symptoms and Signs:
Infected individuals have an itchy, circle rash that is red and inflamed at the edges. More than one patch may appear on an infected person's skin, who may also have the infection without having the common rash associated with the condition.
Causes:
The condition is caused by mold-like fungi that attack the scalp skin's outer layer invading the hair shaft and causing it to break. If untreated, the condition is contagious and easily spreads through contact with infected persons. It may also spread through touching common items touched by an infected person or animal, or grooming or petting an infected animal.
