Definition:
Wernickle-Korsakoff syndrome is a condition characterized by loss of memory and confusion. This is caused by a dysfunction in the brain due to lack of sufficient B vitamins.
Diagnosis:
Diagnostic procedures include examination of blood samples to measure levels of vitamin B12.
Treatment:
Treatment of the disease can be done by regular B vitamin supplements, avoidance of alcohol and constant support from loved ones. The memories do come back after a long period of time, of course with the help of treatment.
Symptoms and Signs:
Patients with the disease develop long-lasting amnesia and confusion in their thoughts and memories. They can handle conversations normally, but they tend to forget the things that have happened in the past. Some patients meanwhile make up stories due to the absence of memories.
Causes:
Wernickle-Korsakoff syndrome is caused by the lack of vitamin B12 that functions to make one’s memory work effectively. In some cases this disease can be fatal.
