Definition:
Fungal meningitis is the swelling of the brain tissue and the spinal cord. It usually develops on persons with weak immune systems.
Diagnosis:
Like other types of meningitis, fungal meningitis is diagnosed via MRI and CT scan procedures. X-ray images are also used to determine the onset of the fungus in the brain tissue.
Treatment:
Fungal meningitis is treated with anti-fungal medication. Patients who are in advanced stages of the disease may experience seizures, paralysis, hearing loss and speech difficulties.
Symptoms and Signs:
Among the signs of fungal meningitis are blurred vision, tiredness, irritability, stiff neck and vomiting. When left untreated, the disease can be very fatal.
Causes:
This type of meningitis is caused by a certain kind of fungus. This fungus can be contracted via a prior infection that took place in the past.
