Definition:
Hairy leukoplakia is a distinct white, irregular-shaped plaque found on the side of the tongue. This lesion is common among patients with HIV. The lesions usually contain fungi, bacteria or viruses, but are not considered contagious. Hairy leukoplakia can be treated by controlling the spread of HIV.
