Definition:
Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) is a chronic increase of fluids in the brain due to dysfunctional glands that produce cerebrospinal fluids.
Diagnosis:
The disease can be diagnosed by CT scan, MRI, and lumbar puncture.
Treatment:
Treatment for NPH is done by surgical draining of the fluids in the brain.
Symptoms and Signs:
Among the symptoms of NPH include ataxia and gait disturbance, dementia, personality disorders such as apathy and slight inattention as well as memory problems. Urinary incontinence is also observed in advanced stages.
Causes:
NPH is caused by the increase of fluids produced in the brain. The cause for the increased production of cranial fluids is due to the impairment of arachnoid granulations that produce the brain fluids.
