Definition:

Flesh eating bacteria is a very rare but very serious bacterial infection medically known as necrotizing fasciitis. This type of infection typically starts in the body tissues that are just below the skin and gradually spreads along the different layers of body tissues such as fat and muscle. This is considered as a highly dangerous infection and is usually found on the legs, arms and abdominal wall, making it a very fatal medical condition.

Diagnosis:

Diagnosis is made through the nature of the wound and other underlying symptoms.

Treatment:

Treatment for this medical condition is primarily through administering antibiotics and prompt treatment is highly critical with this condition. Surgery may also be conducted to remove the infected tissues and fluid.

Symptoms and Signs:

Symptoms that are associated with necrotizing fasciitis include swelling, redness, and pain in the affected area. Other symptoms also include nausea and vomiting, and fever. Symptoms usually develop after 24 hours after having an infected wound, during such time the bacteria rapidly invades the body tissues beneath the skin. Severe symptoms would also include death of the affected area or what is known as gangrene.

Causes:

Flesh eating bacteria is usually caused by one or more bacterial infection. This is usually an infection from a group of bacteria that produces toxins that actively destroys the skin, muscles and fat.
