Definition:

Flynn-Aird syndrome is an extremely rare genetic disorder that is characterized by gradual neurological degeneration that is associated with symptoms such as ataxia, dementia, eye problems, muscle wasting and skin disorders.


Diagnosis:

Caloric testing and audiogram are conducted to check deafness and tinnitus. To check for possible nerve damage, MRI or CT scans are made to check for the possibility of other complications. If there is a suspicion of multiple sclerosis, MRI can prove to be highly useful. For ataxia, a psychometric testing may be done to derive a more definitive examination.


Treatment:

Majority of the treatments available for Flynn-Aird syndrome are typically supportive in nature. Steroids along with IVIG or ACTH may be administered. Approaches may also differ depending on the symptoms involved and treatments are usually presented to alleviate or manage the symptoms.


Symptoms and Signs:

Among the symptoms that comes with Flynn-Aird syndrome include nearsightedness, cataracts, blindness, progressive loss of vision, skin atrophy, stiff joints, chronic skin ulcers, early onset of dementia, epilepsy, inability to control the body's voluntary movements, and peripheral neuritis.


Causes:

This medical condition may be brought about by other underlying complications such as orthopedic issues, peripheral neuropathy, mononeuropathy/radiculopathy, cerebral lesions, intoxications, myopathies, hereditary spastic paraparesis, and infections.
