Hypothalamic Dysfunction
Definition:

Hypothalamic dysfunction is a condition that involves the hypothalamus, a region in the brain that helps control the pituitary glands especially in responding to stress. The hypothalamus gland helps in the regulation if appetite and weight, balance of salt and water in the body, body temperature as well as emotions. Childbirth, growth, sleep and milk production are also regulated by the hypothalamus. The thyroid, ovaries, adrenal glands and testes are all controlled in turn by the pituitary gland.


Diagnosis:

Levels of hormones are determined trough blood and urine tests.


Treatment:

The treatment of hypothalamic dysfunction depends on the cause. If there is a tumor, then radiation or surgery may be necessary.


Symptoms and Signs:

Hypothalamic dysfunction may be caused as a result of surgery, tumors, infections, radiation, genetic disorders, bleeding, head trauma, excess iron and malnutrition. The eating disorders anorexia and bulimia are also possible causes of this condition.


Causes:

The symptoms of hypothalamic disorder depend on the hormones that are lacking. Headaches may be felt if there is a tumor present. Children with this condition may experience growth problems. Hypothalamic dysfunction may lead to hypothyroidism therefore causing fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance and changes in the skin and hair. Women may experience menstrual imbalance, breast enlargement and loss of body hair. Men may also experience some of these symptoms plus loss of muscle mass and impotence.
