Definition:

This term refers to the persistent swelling which is caused by shaving. The term means false (pseudo) hair (follicle) inflammation (itis) of the beard (barbae). It is also referred to as PFB or term such as razor bumps. This often affects male faces especially with curly hair though it can also affect other parts of the body where hair is plucked or shaved.


Diagnosis:

Regular check-up with a dermatologist


Treatment:

This condition can be easily treated by getting rid of the ingrown hair. The extrafollicular hairs can be easily removed by pulling it under the skin or removed entirely with the use of tweezers. In cases of severe conditions the help of a dermatologist is recommended. Other treatments: • Topical antibiotics like Bactroban, oral antibiotics • Topical antibiotic solution or Retin-A prescribed by your physician • Use polyester skin cleansing pad twice a day • Laser hair removal • Benzoyl peroxide and antibiotics like erythromycin • Injectable corticosteroids • Polyester skin-cleansing


Symptoms and Signs:

Skin in the shaved are looks red and itchy and it can also look like pimples. If this is left untreated it can cause keloid scarring in the beard area. Rash can also appear.


Causes:

Instead of growing back hair curls back into the skin because blades used for shaving sharpens the ends of the hairs. Other causes are: Shaving too closely Shaving daily
