Definition:
Actonomycosis is a common condition in animals, especially in young bulls, weaned calves and heifers. Also called as “lumpy jaw”, actonomycosis also occurs in swine, horses, sheep and rarely in dogs.
Symptoms and Signs:
Actonomycosis could cause swelling in the mandible and maxilla. It leads to fistulisation that leaves a thick, yellow and non-odorous pus. When untreated, the disease would form into granuloma at the fistulisation place, which would be followed by bony lesions, periostitis and permanent deformation of the animal’s facial bones.
Causes:
Actonomycosis in animals is caused by “Actinomyces bovis”.
