Chloasma
Definition:

Cloasma otherwise known as the Melasma or mask of pregnacy is a medical condition whereby there is the tanning or discoloration of the skin in the face.


Diagnosis:

Cloasma is diagnosed through physical examination by a dermatologists and the the use Wood's lamp where the excess melanin are distinguished from that of the dermis itself.


Treatment:

Treatment includes using depigmenting agents such as hydroquinone which inhibits tyrosinase, tretinoin, Azelaic acid, peeling of the skin throug glycolic acid and alpha hydroacids and laser treatments.


Symptoms and Signs:

Symptoms includes occurrence of dark and irregular patches in the skin of the face especially that of the upper cheek, nose, lips and forehead.


Causes:

Cloasma is said to be caused by the stimulation of melanocytes or the cells the produce pigments due to too much exposure to the sun. It is also linked to women who are taking oral contraceptives or those HRT or homonal replacement therapies. It is also said to be caused by overproduction of MSH or the Melanocyte-Stimulating Hormone.
