Definition:
Cholangitis is the medical condition where there is an inflammation of the bile duct that is caused by bacterial infection.
Diagnosis:
Diagnosis is made through undergoing laboratory tests such as blood testing to determine the alkaline level in the blood, radiologic tests, colonoscopy, Endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography or ERCP and magnetic resonance cholangio-pancreatography MRCP.
Treatment:
Treatment includes administration of cholestyramine or rifampin to lessen the itching, antibiotics for infection, Vitamin supplements for the bones such as calcium and Vitamin D, intake of ursodiol and undergoing ERCP with balloon dilatation whereby the bile ducts are stretched and in some cases undergoing liver transplantation.
