Chronic Progressive Lymphedema
Definition:

Chronic progressive lymphedema, simply called CPL, is a condition affecting Shire, Belgian and Clydesdale horses.


Treatment:

There is no available treatment for chronic progressive lymphedema aside from medications to relieve symptoms.


Symptoms and Signs:

Symptoms of Chronic progressive lymphedema include progressive swelling, lesions on the lower leg, skin thickening and develop lymphedema.


Causes:

The cause of Chronic progressive lymphedema is the malfunction of the horse’s lymphatic system or a possible compromise with its immune system. Some experts believe this condition can be genetic.
