Akabane Disease
Definition:

The Akabane Disease is an infectious condition that affects the fetus of dogs, sheep, goats, horses, camels and buffalos.


Diagnosis:

Diagnosis can be made based on clinical signs and confirmation of antibodies in the blood of the affected animal or its offspring.


Treatment:

Experts consider treatment of Akabane virus as impractical. There is no available vaccine or treatment to carry out any preventive therapies. The infected animal can be saved by assisting the young in suckling. However, normal practice destroys the affected calf.


Symptoms and Signs:

The disease does not cause evident signs in both adult and young animals. It affects the central nervous system, causing suckling difficulties, walking troubles, problems in learning herd behavior and other symptoms related to the malfunction of the central nervous system.


Causes:

This condition is caused by the Akabane virus.
